What To Pack To Get Off the Beaten Track

Getting off the beaten track is not for everyone but if you’re the kind of intrepid adventurer who doesn’t want to spend all of your time hitting up the same old tourist traps that everyone else is, then it’s probably for you, and you know what? It’s actually pretty easy to do when you pack the right tools to help you…

1. A Sturdy Backpack (Duh)

A trusty backpack is your first mate on any off-road adventure, even if you are staying in a swanky hotel at the end of the day. Look for something lightweight, durable, and with enough compartments to keep your snacks from mingling with your gear. Pro tip: Opt for one with a hydration reservoir because staying hydrated is non-negotiable when you’re miles from the nearest convenience store.

2. Navigation Tools

Sure, Google Maps is great, but what happens when you lose service? Pack a paper map (yes, they still exist), a compass, or a GPS device for those “Wait, wasn’t that rock familiar?” moments.

If you’re heading into serious wilderness, download offline maps or apps like AllTrails before you lose Wi-Fi and your sense of direction.

3. A Hitch Rack for Your Adventure Gear

Planning to bring a bike or other bulky equipment? A hitch rack, like the VelociRAX,  is a game-changer. It keeps your gear secure and saves valuable space inside your car for the important stuff—like snacks and extra layers.

Plus, a hitch rack means you’ll be ready to hit that remote trailhead or take your bike to the middle of nowhere for some epic off-road fun.

4. Multi-Functional Clothing

When you’re traveling off the grid, your wardrobe needs to work double duty. Think moisture-wicking shirts, quick-dry pants, and layers that can handle temperature swings. And don’t forget a waterproof jacket—because Mother Nature loves a surprise rainstorm.

Pack a buff or scarf for extra versatility: it’s a hat, it’s a neck warmer, it’s a pillow when you’re desperate.

5. A Mini First Aid Kit

Adventure is fun until someone scrapes a knee or steps on something they shouldn’t. A compact first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and painkillers will save the day. Throw in some moleskin for blisters—you’ll thank me after mile 10.

6. Snacks for Survival (and Fun)

Nobody wants to be the hangry explorer. Pack lightweight, calorie-dense snacks like trail mix, energy bars, or jerky. Bonus points for treats that make you feel fancy, like dried mango or chocolate-covered espresso beans.

Don’t forget a compact camping stove or portable utensils if you’re planning to cook something Insta-worthy in the wild.

7. A Power Bank or Solar Charger

Even when you’re escaping civilization, your gadgets need juice. A portable power bank or solar charger can keep your phone, GPS, or camera alive for those off-the-grid selfies.

8. A Sense of Adventure (and Humor)

The most important thing to pack? Your go-with-the-flow attitude. Off-the-beaten-path adventures rarely go 100% as planned, and that’s half the fun. Get lost (safely), laugh at the hiccups, and enjoy the journey.
